The School Mental Health Program (SMHP)
Best practice guidelines for mental health promotion programs: Children & Youth
The School Mental Health Program (SMHP) is an American program established in 1989 to provide services to elementary, middle
and high school students. The primary goal of school mental health programs is to facilitate academic success by removing
or reducing conditions of stress and emotional or behavioural problems that serve as barriers to students’ learning. SMHP
staff provide comprehensive, effective, developmentally and culturally sensitive mental health services in a normal school
setting. This is an evidence-based intervention, which aims to improve the school environment and promote mental health for
all students.
