Transgenic Centre

Head: Dr. Hubert Van Tol
In transgenics, researchers manipulate the genetic makeup of an organism to evaluate the functional roles of genes or to mimic certain human genetic disorders in an animal model, most often mice. Research involves the introduction of a new gene or modified gene into the germline of mice or the use of techniques to disrupt genes such as gene knock-outs. These transgenic animal models allow the investigators to explore the role of genes on the development of an organism; to directly study the relationship between genes and behaviour; to observe effects of medications; and to observe new functions of genes whose workings are currently unknown.
