Smoking and Nicotine Dependence Research Unit

Acting Section Head: Paul Fletcher
Focus is on the mechanisms and processes that contribute to the development and maintenance of tobacco use. The unit uses a range of methods, from basic neurobiological studies to laboratory research with cigarette smokers in studies designed to discover how nicotine interacts with the brain to produce addiction. Current studies focus on the neurochemical systems in the brain that are affected by nicotine, nicotine dependence in adolescent smokers and the preclinical development of therapeutics to assist in treating nicotine dependence.
