About CAMH

The Empowerment project

The Empowerment Project, funded by CAMH, was initiated in the spring of 1999 in order to ensure that there is a voice for clients and family members at CAMH in a structured way. As a result of the work of the project, two councils have been created, which are separately incorporated and staffed independently.

New!  Bill of Client Rights

The Bill of Client Rights has been developed to assert and promote the dignity and worth of all of the people who use the services of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). The Bill of Client Rights expresses the truth that clients are first and foremost human beings with the same rights as every Canadian...

Empowerment Council (Client Council)

The Empowerment Council advocates on a systemic level on behalf of Centre clients. The Council provides clients with access to information, and educates clients regarding choices, self-advocacy, critical thinking, leadership training and political awareness. In addition, the Council educates, sensitizes, and provides training to mental health professionals, addiction workers, and other members of the community.

Another important role that the Empowerment Council fills is in facilitating the representation of the client perspective through client participation on relevant CAMH committees and workgroups, etc.  The Council works to increase client involvement in decision-making and accountability structures. The Empowerment Council also conducts outreach and community development with mental health and addiction clients of CAMH. Membership represents clients from addiction and mental health and clients from the four main CAMH sites.
