About Mental Health & Addictions

Alone In Canada - Acknowledgements

Many people and organizations helped to make this project a success. We thank them for their time, effort and encouragement. Funding for the project was provided by Ontario Administration of Settlement and Integration Services (OASIS), Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Our program consultant was Katherine Babiuk.

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) managed the OASIS contract. The principal investigator was Dr. Morton Beiser. Co-investigators were Dr. Laura Simich, Rhonda Mauricette and Dr. Charmaine Williams.

The project's advisory committee met monthly to keep things on track and to give feedback. Members were Paul Kwasi Kafele and Marta Marin of CAMH, Dr. Hung-Tat Lo of Hong Fook Mental Health Association, Dr. Clare Pain of Mount Sinai Hospital, Bhupinder Gill, a cross-cultural consultant, Teresa Dremetsikas of Canadian Centre for the Victims of Torture, Gillian Kranias of Ontario Self-help Network, Drazana Cuvalo-Pedro of the Self-help Resource Centre, Paulina Maciulis of Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants, Christina De Sa, a community health consultant, and Wendy Kwong of the City of Toronto Public Health Services.

We researched the contents of the book by talking to about 60 single immigrants and refugees who have settled in Ontario. This was done by telephone interviews and by holding focus groups in Toronto, Kingston and St. Catharines.

Our thanks to the staff, volunteers and participants of the following agencies for taking part in the research. These are Woodgreen Community Centre, Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants, Elspeth Heyworth Centre for Women, Christ Embassy Church, COSTI, the Eritrean Canadian Community Centre, Kingston and District Immigrant Services and St. John Settlement Services.

Jacqueline L. Scott co-ordinated the project and wrote the book. This book was produced by the CAMH design, editorial and production team, and Philip Sung Design Associates Inc. Laura Wallace drew the illustrations.
